Car pencil sketch tutorial

Dear friends,
many times we spoke about how to make a good pencil car sketch and the importance of doing it well. In this video tutorial by IDsketching we have a great demonstration of how to do it. Some of key points to keep in mind:
1. Black pencils super sharpened, 2. clean desk with only paper pad and pecils this is about discipline and order, good organization prevents making mistakes, clean hands not to make our sketch dirty after few minutes, 3. Line quality sketching light before working the depth of our linework, 4. Good perspective and proportions, this is a must to have good sketches in our portfolio 5. Pencil shading, it is like modeling in 2D with a pencil. It is with a good controlled shading that we create dark areas as well as light ones we also create highlights.

today, thanks to my friend Michal Uhrin, I will show you a real good tutorial to learn how to sketch and color a car. This tutorial is extremely well done by Michal who is finishing his Transportation Design Course at AFAD University of Art & Design in Bratislava SK. I had the pleasure to meet Michal the first time during a car design project sponsorized by the company I work for. I was managing the project and came across Michal who, at the time, was at his first year in school. When I saw his drawings I asked the school to give him permission to participate to the project. At the end of the experience Michal got an internship with us during which he learned a lot and today he is ready for a new one just before getting his final diploma in Transportation Design.

Car design sketching: proportions.

When we sketch a car or an object we always look for good proportion attitude. Good proportions is the most important element when we start a project, there are several ways to obtain good proportions one of them is "positive and negative spaces" balance.
What do I mean by that? Lets look at this series of sketches made by Alexandr Syachinov from MAMI International university in Moscow. In this sketch he is playing with the black forms against the light bleu/green ones, those forms together generate different car shapes.
It is the right balance between the positive (body light blu/green shape) and the negative (dark glass areas) shapes that give the right proportions to our car shapes.
How do we try this technique? It is simple, when you have done your line sketch than use a black marker for the windows/ wheels + bumpers or plastic colored parts. Now use a different light color for the car body and see if there is balance between the 2 colored shapes...just like in Alexandr's sketch.

This video shows how important is to learn sketching "figure drawing" and how beautiful it can be. Passing from a pencil art work to a digital one can become a real challange and a very interesting experience to have.

Prismacolor car sketch by Robo Squirrel

This is a very good sketch made by Robo Squirrel using Prismacolor pencils. I decided to start the new year with this sketch post because lately many of you wrote to me asking about "how to" make a nice pencil sketch. I answeared to you about using "hard" and "soft" same pencil colors explaining to use the "hard" one for line constructions and the "soft" one to mark the sketch and styling . Than I also wrote about doing a shading to give a 3D effect to your sketch using always the same "soft" color pencil.
In the sketch made by Squirrel you find all those tips together. As you can see we have light line constructions and also the sketch itself done with the soft color pencil, we have a nice shadow on the ground that is also the background (it seats well the car on the ground giving contrast), we have a cool shading that shows well the shape of the car and some good details (like front grill).

Now you have a good example of car sketch made with color pencils, try to copy it even using a different color if you feel (like tuscan red or black).
